This summary about hybrid themes is based on William Caplin’s Classical forms book. Caplin’s work represents a fantastic summary of forms used in the classical period.
There four basic hybrid themes:
- Antecedent – continuation
- Antecedent – cadential
- CBI – continuation
- CBI – consequent
It is always useful to order these types in relation to their similarities with the sentence and the period.
PERIOD => CBI – Consequent => Antecedent – Cadential => Antecedent – Continuation => CBI – Continuation => SENTENCE
